What happens during a home euthanasia?

It may help to start by explaining the process of euthanasia. During a home euthanasia, your pet may be sedated first to make it a bit sleepy. This sedation is given by a small injection in the muscle, and may take up to 10 minutes to become effective.

Then a small area of hair is shaved off the front leg. The veterinarian inserts a needle and injects the euthanasia solution, which is a very heavy sedative. Over the next 1-2 minutes, the pet quickly falls asleep and does not wake up. Please see the video below for a further discussion about home euthanasia.

One of the main benefits of home euthanasia is the freedom to choose a specific place in your home or property to say farewell to your companion. You may choose a peaceful place under some trees, or you may choose the old chair that your dog loved so much. The vet can usually accommodate your chosen setting, and only requires good lighting and access to the front leg.
